Katie Taylor – Amanda Serrano Set for April 30 at Madison Square Garden

Speculation has been that a deal was imminent for a fight between undisputed women’s lightweight champion Katie “KT” Taylor (20-6 KOs) and unified female featherweight champion Amanda “The Real Deal” Serrano (42-1-1, 30 KOs). What has been a rumor is now a reality.

A LONG TIME COMING

Matchroom Boxing has announced that the fight is signed, sealed, and will happen on April 30 at Madison Square Garden in New York City live on DAZN. As part of the announcement, Taylor said the following:

“This is a fight I’ve wanted for a long, long time, and I’m just excited for it to finally take place because these are the kind of fights I’m in the sport for. People have been talking about this fight for years, and there have been times I wondered if it was ever going to happen.

“So, I’m very grateful to Eddie Hearn, everyone at Matchroom, DAZN, and Madison Square Garden for getting it over the line.”

IT’S MORE THAN BUSINESS

Serrano is equally excited. The sport has been her life and passion. She’s been chomping at the bit for this kind of signature match. For her, it’s more than a fight.

“It is a dream come true to have the opportunity to headline Madison Square Garden and do so against one of the greatest boxers of all time in Katie Taylor. Since I was a young girl, my only boyfriend has been boxing!

“On April 30, I am going to make history for me, for my team, for my family, for Puerto Rico, for every Latina and Latino, and for all women worldwide.”

AS GOOD AS IT GETS

What we have here is a legit women’s super-fight, a contest of highly accomplished and decorated champions. It pits two of the top five fighters in women’s boxing. They are also the first women to headline a card at MSG. So, when Serrano talks about making history, she’s correct for many reasons.

On paper, it is a virtual toss-up. With Serrano moving up to 135 for the fight, it will be interesting how she deals with the physical strength of the undisputed champ. On the other hand, how will Taylor deal with the versatility and boxing skills of Serrano? It’s that dynamic and those questions that make this such a fascinating battle. Buckle your seatbelts folks, this is a can’t-miss battle.
