Callum Smith has one goal in sight, a fight with Canelo Alvarez!
Recently, WBA super middleweight champion Callum Smith turned down an offer to engage in a unification bout with WBO champion Billy Joe Saunders.
The reason? According to Smith, the offer to fight Saunders just wasn’t lucrative enough.
During an exclusive interview with the UK’s Daily Express, Smith gave a window on his future ambitions and goals, which he fully hopes is a fight with Canelo Alvarez.
“If the phone call came tomorrow to fight Canelo [Alvarez] I’d take it. If the phone-call came for another unification fight and it made sense, I’d take that.
“We’ll talk through different options, different opponents, the availability of them. But I’m in the sport to be the best and beat the best!”
While Smith is not holding out hopes for a unification bout against the likes of Caleb Plant or even Saunders, the fighter known as “Mundo” feels he’s in line for a shot at Alvarez.
Furthermore, Smith seemed to question the legitimacy of Canelo being called a world champion at super middleweight.
“Although he’s technically got a world title at super middle, he’s won the regular. He didn’t want to beat one of the top fighters at the weight like me or someone like Caleb Plant.
“I need to make sure I keep winning so when he does move up we can get it done.”
Smith went on to further say that if Alvarez wants to go down as the greatest Mexican fighter ever, he needs to move up to 168.
Between now and the fight he hungers for the most, look for Smith to stay active. In fact, the plan is for Smith to return to the ring in September with a title defense in his native England, followed by another possible title defense at the end of the year in the U.S.
Alvarez seems to be the center of attention for every fighter at middleweight and super middleweight.
Smith is certainly making it known he wants his shot like everyone else. Will he get it? Only time (and if Canelo is up to it) will tell!
