Errol Spence Optimistic on Terence Crawford Bout Getting Over the Line
Without question, one of the biggest boxing matches to be made would pit Errol Spence versus Terence Crawford. Last year the two welterweights got deep into negotiations but, in the ninth hour, the talks first soured then expired. General public perception places the bulk of the blame on WBO 147-pound champion Terence “Bud” Crawford’s (39-0, 30 KO’s) shoulders.
It is true that Bud, 35, appeared to have the most demands and even tried to inject new business partners into the deal. Meanwhile, IBF, Super WBA and WBO welterweight champion Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr (28-0, 22 KO’s) had assumed a reputation for taking on all challengers. Luckily, regardless of who was the culprit, Spence and Crawford are once again engaged in heated negotiations.
MAN TO MAN
Talks of the two being in negotiations have permeated throughout the industry for weeks. But it feels a lot better to hear inside players speak on the subject. Even better than knowing the two teams are talking is hearing that the talks are going very well. At least this is what Spence explained during a recent Q&A with On the Rocks. One of the major differences this time was taking out the middleman, figuratively speaking.
“Me and Crawford are definitely in talks. We been talking, so hopefully it can be me and him. [On why talks have been better] Me and Crawford, we are talking directly. We were probably on the call for 30 or 40 minutes. We probably spent about 15 minutes talking about how the negotiation part was going but we were just getting a feel for each other.
Basically talking about our families, current situations we have going on and stuff like that and then we started talking about boxing and us fighting and negotiations and things like that. But it went well. Our teams are still negotiating. We’re still having talks so it’s going very well.”
FINGERS CROSSED
On the heels of Tank Davis versus Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney versus Vasiliy Lomachenko, Crawford versus Spence would be a sensational addition to the big fight line-up. Yet, it’s clear that this latest attempt at making the fight is taking place all behind closed doors.
