Shakur Stevenson Sounds Off on Boxing Politics!
Rising featherweight contender Shakur Stevenson has made it clear that promotional pacts shouldn’t prevent “mega fights” from happening.
Stevenson eschewed bias in his assessment of the current state of boxing. He included his own promoter ,the legendary Bob Arum, as one of the fixtures who could fix this “other side of the street” nonsense we’ve been hearing lately.
He also referenced Al Haymon, Oscar De La Hoya and Eddie Hearn. Stevenson states that all parties should have one “big ass meeting” and make boxing great again!
I couldn’t agree more with Stevenson! Over the years, it seems as if the promoter has become more in the spotlight than the actual fighter. Promoters should guide fighters throughout the ranks from prospect to contender, maximizing the exposure and name recognition.
Instead, as of late, you have the promoter’s going back and forth with each other, prolonging fights, slandering each other and outright advising against the fighters’ wishes.
The promoter works for the fighter, not the other way around. Not to say we lack for some very good inter-promotional fights. Jose Ramirez vs Maurice Hooker is a recent example. Both, Eddie Hearn and Bob Arum promoted that fight.
At the end of the day, boxing is at its all time greatest when everyone involved is working together. Hopefully, the sport’s top promoters take the young fighter’s advice and sweep personal issues aside to heed Shakur Stevenson’s words.
MAKE BOXING GREAT AGAIN!
