Team Catterall Targeting a Fight with WBC Champion Regis Prograis

“Frustration” and “inactivity” are words that can describe Jack “El Gato” Catterall (26-1, 13 KOs) following his controversial split decision loss to then-unified junior welterweight champion Josh Taylor in February 2022. But according to Catterall’s trainer, Jamie Moore, things are looking upward, and his fighter could be in line for a possible fight with WBC junior welterweight champion Regis “Rougarou” Prograis (28-1, 24 KOs).

Catterall returns to the ring on May 27 to face Darragh Foley (22-4-1, 10 KOs) in Manchester Arena. While preparing for his upcoming fight, Moore sat down with media source ProBoxTV and said that El Gato is in excellent spirits and looking forward to getting back into the ring.

“I’m so happy for him. Even though he’s been in the gym and seems okay just getting on with training, now I can see he has that look in his eye and that spring in his step.”

“He is still only 29 years old. That gives him at least three years where he can be at his peak. He is such an intelligent fighter. You should see some of the stuff he does in the gym. I think the better type of fighter he is in there with, the better you will see him perform. When he has a good fighter pressing him, that is when I see the best from him.”

PLENTY OF OPTIMISM

On two separate occasions, Catterall thought he would have the opportunity to show his best stuff in a rematch with Taylor. However, on two occasions, the matchup was scratched. It left Catterall bitter and angry. But he has since moved on.

In March 2023, Catterall signed with Matchroom. With a new promoter guiding his career, Team Catterall believes big things are in store. According to Moore, one particular fighter is high on their wishlist.

“Someone like Regis Prograis would be a great fight. We can’t overlook Darragh Foley, but we should be honest in the fact that Jack should beat him. But moving forward, I would love him to get the Prograis fight.

I truly believe he is the best in the world at super lightweight. Matchroom said they will get him boxing three times this year. He will be out in May, September, and December, which is perfect for him. He just needs some momentum now and to build on that.”

Word on the street is that the WBC 140-pound champion is in talks with the Chairman of Matchroom promotions, Eddie Hearn. If Rougarou ends up signing with the promotional company, Regis Prograis – Jack Catterall would be a definite possibility.

Team Catterall is hopeful that turns out to be the case. Moore feels that his fighter is in his prime. With a new team behind the scenes and a fresh mindset, the trainer believes the best is ahead for Catterall.
