Team Usyk Names Daniel Dubois As Backup Option for Tyson Fury Fight
As 3kingsboxing.com previously reported, there is trouble in the waters for the proposed April 29 showdown between unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Uysk (20-0, 13 KOs) and WBC champion Tyson Fury (33-1, 24 KOs) on April 29. As a result, Team Usyk has a backup plan in place in reigning WBA Regular champion Daniel Dubois.
Speaking to Great Britain’s iD Boxing, Usyk’s promoter, Alex Krassyuk, revealed that should a fight with Fury not get finalized, their next option is Dubois (18-1, 17 KOs).
“Yup, this is the next step for Usyk. So, what can I say? We have to comply with it. It’s probably not the worst fight for the UK – Dubois is English. Usyk has fought a couple of times here, so he’s probably a bit known in the UK.
This is a fight where an Englishman is fighting for three belts. It’s a bit more than a normal heavyweight fight . . . It’s a world title fight for three major belts between the Ukrainian, the former undisputed cruiserweight champion, the Olympic champion of London 2012, and Dubois – the Englishman who is the contender. . . It’s still an attraction.”
IT’S ALL ABOUT SCHEDULING
Dubois is Usyk’s mandatory challenger. He is coming off a third-round stoppage over Kevin Lerena in December 2022. The WBA Regular belt-holder overcame a mountain of adversity, as he was knocked down three times before rallying. Following his win, x-rays revealed that Dubois tore his ACL in his knee.
The Brit is currently rehabilitating his injury. When asked about the physical status and availability of Dubois, Krassyuk said those issues will be resolved over the next few days.
THE AFTER EFFECT
Krassyuk openly talking about Usyk fighting Dubois is a byproduct of the laboring negotiations between the unified champion and Fury. Team Usyk is holding out hope that a deal can be made with Fury. However, they fully intend to move on, if nothing is resolved. Frustrated with their inability to secure the fight with the WBC champion, they feel they have no choice but to plan their next move.
