Alvarez V Derevyanchenko at 168?
The sport’s biggest name and money maker, Canelo Alvarez (53-1-2, 36KOs), will likely return to the ring in September. The question is: against who? That’s currently unknown. Prior to COVID-19 lock-downs, he was penciled in to face WBO super middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders(29-0, 14KOs) in May. However that, along with every other fight, was panned.
The hope, at least on behalf of Eddie Hearn and Saunders, was to have that fight rescheduled for the Fall. Right now, it appears Alvarez will possibly square off with two-time middleweight title challenger Sergiy Derevyanchenko (13-2, 10KOs) at 168 instead.
Derevyanchenko last fought against current IBF middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (40-1-1, 35KOs) in October 2019. In that fight, many people felt he should’ve been declared the winner. As for Alvarez, he was last seen in the ring knocking out former light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (34-4-1, 29KOs) in November 2019.
If this fight is made, it would give Derevyanchenko his biggest payday and an opportunity to defeat one of boxing’s best fighters.
3kingsboxing.com will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
