Eddie Hearn Says Whittaker to Make his American Debut Soon
Top light heavyweight contender “The Surgeon” Ben Whittaker made easy work of veteran Braian Suarez in one round. With this victory in the rearview, Matchroom Boxing Chairman Eddie Hearn laid out the path toward the title for The Surgeon.
If you went to the concession stand or looked down at the phone, then you are undoubtedly watching the replay, asking what happened. Whittaker immediately took control of the fight with the jab, before landing a counter-right hand on the ear area. Suarez never recovered and was counted out. His team complained that the punch was on the back of the head.
WHITTAKER IS COMING TO AMERICA
Nonetheless, The Surgeon is showing vast improvement and is almost ready for a title shot. During the in-ring, post-fight interview, Hearn explained their future plans:
“Next stop, he is going to be where he should be; he’s going to be where all the superstars go. I’d like to walk him in front of the bright lights…Barclay Center in Brooklyn, you’re going to see a true star of British boxing, Benn Whittaker, make his American debut.”
“Then we are going to come back, and we are going to headline back in Birmingham in a big fight – whether it’s a big domestic fight or a final eliminator for the world championship.”
Whittaker is rated #3 (WBC) and #4 (IBF), so he is right in the title picture. Some may feel he should fight in a title eliminator next. However, Hearn wants to make sure that once they make that kind of jump, their fighter is ready.
