Shadasia Green Suffers Career-threatening Brain Injury

Former unified super middleweight champion Shadasia “Sweet Terminator” Green is currently on the road to recovery. However, it appears increasingly likely that her fighting days may be over for good.

There were frightening moments and deep concern for Green (16-2, 11 KOs) after she lost her titles via ninth-round stoppage to Lani Daniels on April 17 at Madison Square Garden Theater in New York City. Moments after the bout was halted, Green slumped to the canvas in visible distress, shaking her head as ringside personnel rushed to assist her. She was quickly placed on a stretcher and taken out of the arena, leaving fans and observers shaken.

In the days following the fight, Sweet Terminator took to social media to update supporters on her condition. While her message was reassuring, the severity of the situation cannot be overlooked.

Although Green expressed a desire to regain her titles, the likelihood of that happening appears slim. A brain bleed, known medically as a subdural hematoma, is treated with extreme caution in boxing. It is one of the most serious injuries a fighter can sustain inside the ring.

In most cases, state athletic commissions across the United States are hesitant, if not outright unwilling, to license a fighter who has suffered a subdural hematoma. Given those realities, it would not be surprising if those closest to Green eventually sit down with the 36-year-old and strongly advise retirement for the sake of her long-term health.

First and foremost, the priority is a full and speedy recovery. At this moment, Green is speaking from the heart of a fighter. However, the decisions ahead may ultimately need to come from a place of preservation rather than competition.
