Andy Cruz Dominates on the Cards to Defeat Omar Salcido

In his first fight of the year, standout lightweight boxer Andy Cruz (5-0, 2 KO’s) defeated a game Omar Salcido (20-2, 14 KO’s) by unanimous decision. Right from the start it was clear that Cruz had the faster hands and more educated feet. The Cuban would use these advantages to mainly compete on the back foot while keeping Salcido in striking range with his jab. As Cruz warmed and his comfort level increased, he connected with sharp, heavy combinations with regularity.

To his credit, Salcido ate the majority of Cruz’s offense without demonstrating any real ill effect. For his part, Salcido did his best work when digging down to the body which he was committed to throughout the bout. During the middle rounds, and heading down the stretch, Cruz’s accurate shots began marring and swelling his foes face. Despite the abuse and being notably outclassed, Salcido never stopped trying to win or marching forward with purpose.

In the final thirty seconds of the match, Cruz came extremely close to stopping Salcido but could not. As a result, the Cuban prevailed by way of unanimous decision to the tune of 99-91 and 98-92 (twice). It will be interesting to see who the professional standout faces next.
