Dirrell Wins a TD over Douhlin
Former super middleweight champion Anthony Dirrell, 33, defeated Denis Douglin, 29, by a technical decision in the sixth round of a planned 10-round bouton Fridaynight on the PBC On FS1 card.
The fight was shortened after Douglin opened a bad cut above Dirrell’s left eye. The ringside doctor said the Flint native was unable to continue. The cut occurred because of an incidental head-butt, so the fight went to scorecards, and Dirrell led on each of the judges’ cards.
The win left Dirrell with a 31-1-1 record, including 24 KOs. Douglin, a southpaw from Brooklyn, New York, left the ring with a 20-6 record and 13 KOs.
The bout was Dirrell’s first match in Flint since he knocked out Dante Craig at Atwood Stadium in July 2011.
In the lead-up toFriday’smatch, Dirrellsaidhe hoped the fight would be about more than simply himself. He said he hoped it would shine a positive light on the city, a counterweight to the bad press Flint receives as a result of poverty, crime and lingering concerns about the city’s lead-in-water crisis.
“I wanted to bring something to Flint because of all the negativity that’s going on,” Dirrell said.
