A Chris Arreola says loss to Adam Kownacki could mean retirement.
Former heavyweight title contender Chris Arreola spoke to the media after the press conference officially announcing the August 3 bout with undefeated top contender Adam Kownacki.
The veteran heavyweight is looking to get back into title contention. He offered some insight concerning his career.
“I told Al [Haymon] last year that if I didn’t fight before the year was out I was gonna retire. So, he put me on the card of Wilder vs Fury. I made it happen little by little, just keep grinding.
“Here we are with Kownacki. I got me a new trainer. Working with Joe Gossen should be a fun fight and I’m gonna make it a fun fight.”
Arreola fighter expressed the importance of this fight and why we should expect to see the best of him. He also hinted at possible retirement given a loss or bad performance.
“It definitely has to be the best version of me. Like I said, this is my last saddle run. I lose, I retire. If I look bad, I retire. So I gotta give it my all.”
This is not the first time in recent months the Mexican contender has talked about retiring if he loses. Before facing then undefeated contender Jean Pierre Augustin on the under-card of Errol Spence vs Mikey Garcia, he expressed the same feelings.
The 38 year old has had three unsuccessful championship title attempts and with the changing climate in the division, that window is closing even more rapidly. A victory would be huge at getting his career off of life support.
Kownacki is highly rated by the WBC and rumored to be a possible opponent for WBC champion Deontay Wilder; contingent upon a victory over challenger Luis Ortiz and a if a Tyson Fury rematch isn’t made for this year.
The heavyweight division is at its best. Things have been more exciting than ever in a long time. Filled with characters and upsets, its been great for both the fans and pundits!
