A HUGE upset in Spain as David Avanesyan gets the knockout victory!
WBA #5, WBO #5, IBF #3 and WBC #2 ranked welterweight contender Kerman Lejarraga was on his way to bigger things! His win over ranked contender Bradley Skeete in April 2018 gave him world level acclaim.
He then followed up with two more wins (one against the respected Frankie Gavin) that had many pundits labeling him a “serious contender” and the rankings proved this.
Sitting at 27-0, with 22 knockouts, all he had to do next is get passed the unranked David Avanesyan! Everything was setup for him to win. He had the hometown venue, the hometown support and the momentum as he stopped twelve out of his last thirteen opponents.
Avanesyan on the other hand, was originally scheduled to face top welterweight prospect Josh Kelly. While coming off a loss to another top welterweight in Egidijus Kavaliauskas, the Russian really isn’t the type of fighter to overlook.
In May of 2016, he was involved in a bout against future Hall of Fame inductee Shane Mosley in which he was a major underdog. People thought the three-division champion would withstand the test of time and easily defeat Avanesyan. They were wrong!
The same scenario happened here. Though unranked before fighting Lejarraga, he will definitely be inserted in the rankings after this win.
Now social media is BUZZING about a possible fight against Kelly. If the fight didn’t garner much attention before, it has now!
