Banks: Power will be the Difference

Let him be arbiter, there is little doubt that Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (39-1-1, 35 KO’s) would be facing WBA world middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (52-1-2, 35 KO’s) in his next bout. Golovkin vigorously sought a rubber match for their 2018 bout to no avail. Although, it’s plainly evident that Canelo is not thinking about GGG in the slightest. Instead, Alvarez has his own dream fight of sorts with WBO world light heavyweight champion Sergey “The Krusher” Kovalev (34-3-1, 29 KO’s) on November 2.

GOLOVKIN VS DEREVYANCHENKO

Despite the lengthy pursuit, Golovkin has finally chosen to move on from that chapter in his life. In fact, this Saturday GGG is set to tangle with Sergiy “The Technician” Derevyanchenko (13-1, 10 KO’s). Derevyanchenko notably gave Daniel “The Miracle Man” Jacobs all he could handle in their October 27, 2018 dust-up. While not victorious, the Technician was able to push the bout to a split decision on the cards.

Since that time, Derevyanchenko has bounced back into the win column after claiming a unanimous decision over “Golden’ Jack Culcay (26-4, 13 KO’s). Having tasted his first professional defeat, Derevyanchenko is primed and ready to score the biggest win of his career over Gennady Golovkin. GGG’s chief second, Jonathon Banks, has other ideas in mind!

To begin, Banks holds the Technician in high esteem. The former Wladimir Klitschko head trainer feels that Derevyanchenko will certainly put up a good fight, while making a solid account of his skills. Although in the end, Banks can’t see Derevyanchenko overcoming GGG’s ring experience and crunching power. For this reason, Banks is neither overlooking their Ukrainian foe, nor is he losing sleep about the swiftly approaching fight.

“We haven’t met nobody to sit toe to toe with GGG and bang with him, so could he be the first? I doubt it! Because if you could bang with Jacobs, and G hits harder than Jacobs, so I don’t think nobody in their right mind can sit there and bang with GGG. That’s just my opinion […] I think it’s going to be a battle in the beginning, but once GGG starts catching him, his power is going to take over and it’ll be the end of the fight.” ~Jonathan Banks, Gennady Golovkin chief second
