Alycia Baumgardner Wants Undisputed Bout with Hyun-Mi Choi Next!
Newly crowned unified junior lightweight champion Alycia “The Bomb” Baumgardner (13-1, 7KO), after walking away with the belts of nemesis former unified champion Mikaela Mayer (17-1 5KO), is targeting undisputed with WBA champion Hyun-Mi Choi (19-0-1, 5KO)
There was intense bad blood between the unified champion and Mayer as they fought to a split decision in favor of Baumgardner. It was a fight that saw The Bomb controlling the early rounds, with Mayer coming on in the second half of the contest.
UNDISPUTED IS NEXT
Despite the fight being close, in the post-fight interview, Baumgardner expressed having no interest in a rematch.
“I think I landed the cleaner shots, the harder shots. I had a cut above her forehead. So yeah, I was the harder puncher. I dug deep.”
“That girl ain’t getting no rematch. I’m going after Choi (Hyun-Mi), like I said. Undisputed is what I claim, it’s what I am going to do.”
Some fans were upset to hear about Baumgardner’s unwillingness to do a rematch. Yet, she is not obligated to do so since there was no rematch clause. Furthermore, undisputed is the ultimate endgame.
WILL CHOI TAKE THE FIGHT FOR UNDISPUTED?
In 2021, Baumgardner expressed wanting undisputed after defeating Terri Harper. Equally important, she originally wanted to fight the WBA champion, Choi, and Mayer was to be last for undisputed.
The fight with Choi never materialized, resulting in Baumgardner accepting to fight Mayer. It will be interesting to see if the fight with the WBA champion can be made, considering it will be a financial benefit for both women going for undisputed.
