Michael Williams Sr. Outlines Lack Of Availability From Roy Jones Jr.

The fallout continues from the postponed February 25 bout between welterweights Michael “Boy Wonder” Williams Jr (20-1, 13 KOs) and multiple-divisional champion Adrien “The Problem” Broner (34-4-1, 24 KOs). Williams Jr had to withdraw after suffering a fractured jaw in sparring. Specifically, there is serious beef father, Michael Williams Sr. has with Roy Jones Jr. One of his reasons is the lack of commitment he felt Jones showed towards his son during training camp.

WHO DO YOU BELIEVE?

On February 17, 3kingsboxing.com contacted Williams Sr. He revealed the injury happened during what he called an “unnecessary sparring session” that occurred a week before the fight. Williams Sr. voiced outrage at Jones’ decision, and claims his son’s big opportunity was sabotaged!

Jones responded by saying that Williams Jr wasn’t looking good defensively in camp and did not show any progress. The Hall of fame inductee said he was looking out for the kid and even questioned if Williams Jr. was ready Broner.

Team Williams viewed that contest as a huge opportunity and was not going to let it slip by for anyone. Having heard Jones’ opinion on the matter, Williams Sr. stands by his initial opinion. During a follow-up interview with World Combat Sports (Hyperlink3), he said Jones is only looking out for himself.

“I don’t give a fuck, bro. That Tuesday [February 14], that sparring was unnecessary. […] In my opinion, it is a form of sabotage and I’m gonna tell you why it’s a form of sabotage. Because the whole fucking camp when he was coming in and out, he was fucking negative and he was trying to talk Mike out of that motherfucking fight. […] This shit was breaking my son’s spirit, mentally.”

NOT ALL-IN

Williams Sr. felt that Jones wasn’t there for his son; calling Jones a “part-time trainer”. As a result, he could not give a full assessment of what was going on with his son.

“How can you get nigga ready when you’re going in and out of training camp? You see, everything I drop is the truth. I’m not trying to make us look a certain way. I’m giving it to you how it is.

“Roy has to protect his brand because all them fucking fighters at that camp know that Roy ain’t there 100 percent, he’s not! Look at the facts. Immediately after the fight fell out, Roy is in Germany with one of his female fighters.

“[…] So even then, guess what? Even if Mike didn’t break his jaw, guess who was gonna leave camp again? Mr. Roy fucking Jones!”

This has become a battle of “he-said vs. he-said”. Williams Sr. still respects Jones and acknowledged that his son did learn from one of the greatest fighters of all time. However, it’s clear that the relationship between Jones and Team Williams is permanently severed.
