David Benavidez Lays Off of His Pursuit of Canelo Alvarez Fight

Two-time WBC super middleweight champion David “The Mexican Monster” Benavidez (28-0, 24KO) has dismissed the notion of fighting undisputed champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and shot down Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn’s invitation at the same time.

The boxing public continues to talk about Canelo (60-2-2, 39KO) and PBC’s divorce after only one fight out of a three-fight deal. Several boxing fans and pundits believe the undisputed champion wasn’t keen on fighting Benavidez and used a loophole to get out of the contract.

Alvarez is rumored to be looking to rejoin forces with the British promoter. While speaking to the media, Hearn has decided to extend an olive branch towards The Mexican Monster.

“We would be happy to talk to Benavidez, and try to make that fight with Canelo Alvarez.”

Eddie Hearn

NO THANKS, I’M GOOD

Boxing fans have been waiting to hear from Benavidez. It seems he has finally broken his silence in an interview with ESPN.

“The reason why this fight is not happening is because Canelo doesn’t want it to happen, plain and simple . . . I don’t need Canelo. I mean, the only reason people fight Canelo is for a payday. I don’t care about money. I care about winning titles and giving the fans the best fights possible.”

In this author’s opinion, the final statement made by the two-time WBC champion is a rejection of Hearn’s offer.

“PBC and Al Haymon have been paying me really good for a really long time. So I’m very happy with them.”

Benavidez has already started moving on by signing to fight former WBC light heavyweight champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk. The victor will receive the WBC interim title, and the opportunity to possibly fight for the undisputed crown.
