Crawford Trainer Bomac Confirms Spence Rematch is Next

The highly anticipated rematch between undisputed welterweight champion Terence “Bud” Crawford (40-0, 31KO) and former unified champion Errol “The Truth” Spence (28-1, 22KO) has officially been greenlit. Trainer Brian “Bomac” McIntyre shared the confirmation with Pro Boxing Fans, revealing that Crawford informed him of the development.

“He [Terence Crawford] just texted me yesterday and said that Spence activated his rematch . . . yeah he just activated his rematch. Match is confirmed, but we don’t have a date and stuff like that yet.”

A mere day prior, Bomac had issued a word of caution to The Truth regarding his decision to trigger the rematch clause, during an interview with Fight Hub TV. His assertion was clear: Crawford might outshine his prior victory in the upcoming rematch.

THE WEIGHT CLASS QUESTION

The news of the rematch doesn’t come as a complete surprise, as Spence swiftly expressed his desire for a rematch following his initial loss.

One prominent query circulating in the boxing world pertains to the weight class of the rematch — will it be contested at welterweight or the junior middleweight limit? Both fighters have previously indicated their willingness for the bout to take place at a higher weight.

Ultimately, the decision lies with the undisputed champion. Per their initial negotiated agreement, the victor has the authority to determine the weight class.

Some boxing pundits might question the necessity of a rematch given the comprehensive manner in which Crawford dismantled Spence. Still, the former unified champion reserves the right to call for the rematch, regardless of prevailing sentiments.
