Brandon Figureoa Proves to be Too Much for Damien Vazquez

After ten rounds of competition, regular WBA super bantamweight champion Brandon “The Heartbreaker” Figueroa (21-0-1, 16 KO’s) defeated Damien “Sugar” Vazquez (15-2-1, 8 KO’s) by way of knockout.

The bout marked the third defense of his title.

ONE-SIDED SLAUGHTER

Right from the clang of the opening bell, both combatants said to hell with a feel out process! Initially, Vazquez found great success darting in and out while popping the Heartbreaker with swift one-two’s. Yet, during the second half of the period, Figueroa found equilibrium when making it an inside fight.

His success continued during the second round as he kept the fight at range and regularly popped Sugar from the outside. The switch-hitting champion continued to control the action through the third but really started taking chunks out of Vazquez during the fourth.

During that period, the Texan could not miss with his jab and damaging hooks. As a result, Vazquez’s face began to swell and blood oozed from his mouth.

To his credit, the challenger proved to be a one tough customer and refused to go easily. Remaining game, the Colorado native never stopped throwing punches. Unfortunately for him, he was not landing nearly enough to claim the rounds.

Additionally, by the end of the seventh, his right eye was swelling swiftly. Even worse, Figueroa’s deflating hooks to the body had Vasquez looking extremely weary and war torn.

During the ninth round, Figueroa was looking like Candyman due the mind-boggling amount of crunching left-hooks he was landing. While in the corner in between rounds, Vazquez’ corner was warned that he was taking too many shots and the bout was in danger of being stopped. Some might wonder why it had not been halted already.

Then like clockwork the end mercifully came in the tenth. After Figueroa landed one last left hook to the head and two destructive body punches, referee Gary Rosado felt compelled to jump in and stop the one-sided beat down.
