Caleb Plant Invokes Edgar Berlanga’s Honor to Land a Fight

While milling about the premises for the Canelo versus Jaime Munguia weigh-in, former WBC super middleweight champion Caleb “Sweethands” Plant (22-2, 13 KO’s) ran into the top 168-pound contender Edgar “The Chosen One” Berlanga (22-0, 17 KO’s). As it often is with fighting rival fighting dogs in close proximity, they began growling and barking.

Luckily the heated moment didn’t boil over into a physical spat. Even better, the two arrived at a tentative mutual agreement to face one another in the ring. Clearly, there is still a tall mountain and wide ocean to cross before this verbal pact can be transformed into an actual binding legal document. Yet again, it’s a good start.

READY FOR TAKE OFF?

The Chosen One’s entrance into the sport was accompanied with an overabundance of hype and attention. This was only amplified by his ending the first 16 bouts with first-round knockouts. As his competition increased though, it was immediately apparent that Berlanga’s power and skillset had a vast gulf separating them. As a result, rather than chasing more of the elite killers in the division that his visibility would allow, Team Berlanga has kept his competition fairly pedestrian.

To sign off on a duel versus Plant would signal a tremendous elevation in in-ring opposition. Another fight that fits this same bill is undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. In fact, Team Berlanga is hopeful that they can secure this prizefight later this year. No one, including Sweethands, could blame The Chosen One for dancing with the redhead over Plant. That’s just good business.

CHERRY PICK OR CHERRY BOMB?

For his part, barring the unforeseen, Plant versus Berlanga would be viewed by many as Plant’s fight to lose. He’s a bit more seasoned, has the more fluid skills and defense in the ring and has faced starkly better competition.

Naturally, Plant would have to be mindful of Berlanga’s formidable power. Yet, since his impressive knockout streak ended, The Chosen One has only claimed one knockout in his past six fights. Skillswise, Berlanga is likely a step back from his most recent in-ring nemeses. However, The Chosen One is still a solid name and should represent a solid payday and fun event.

For these reasons, it’s no surprise that Plant would be eager to jump at the chance to rumble with the Brooklyn native. So stay tuned and let’s see if this turns into something, or if it was just another fleeting hot topic.
