Third Time is the Charm

Former 2012 Olympic gold medalist Luke Campbell (20-3, 16ko) is getting a third bite at the apple. He will face former WBA “regular” super featherweight champion Javier Fortuna (35-2, 24ko) for the vacant WBC lightweight championship.

This has come full circle for the former British Olympian since Devin “The Dream” Haney was placed as champion in recess while recovering from shoulder surgery.

Campbell failed to grab a championship on two other attempts. First in 2017 against then-WBA champion Jorge Linares, and in 2019 against unified champion Vasiliy “Hi-Tech” Lomachenko.

The 32-year-old former Olympian’s time is running out, and he hopefully can finally seize the moment. However, it won’t be easy at all. The man he will be facing is capable of pulling off an upset.

Fortuna has some mileage but is still a top contender for a good reason. The Dominican fighter was ordered to face the WBC champion before fate intervened, delaying things until now. The former champion has been looking to become a champion again since losing his title against Jason Sosa back in 2016.

The former champion has been hungry for a long time, and even came close against then-IBF champion Robert Eastern Jr. back in 2018, losing by split decision.

British flamboyant Promoter Eddie Hearn responded via twitter to fans’ inquiries about the situation concerning the vacant title fight.

Haney will be paying extra special attention to this situation as champion in recess as soon as he has fully recovered. The boxing community can be certain there will be no hesitation, he will be looking to fight whoever holds his belt.

Although nothing has been officially announced, this is a fight that undoubtedly will become a reality.
