Sergey Kovalev Banking on Beneficial Move to Cruiserweight
When last in the ring, Russian bruiser Sergey “The Krusher” Kovalev (34-4-1, 29 KO’s) ended the night unconscious and draped over the middle rope like soggy laundry. The match, versus Canelo Alvarez, actually started rather beneficially as Kovalev was able to control and frustrate the redhead with his sturdy jab. Yet, as the rounds wore on, and fatigue gnawed at his muscles and bones, the Krusher slowed enough to get clobbered by an unmerciful left, right hook two-piece. The rest is history.
Clearly, Kovalev had no desire to end his career on such a demoralizing moment. As such, the former three-time world champion is now slated to return to action on May 14. He’ll face the younger Pulev brother, Tervel Pulev (16-0, 13 KO’s), at the Forum located in Inglewood, California. Originally, it was reported that Kovalev was going to test his aging might with Fanleng Meng. Instead of Kovalev however, Meng switched up and penned a bout with Jean Pascal.
STILL CRUSHING OR CRUSHED?
It will be very revealing to see what Kovalev does when in with the undefeated Bulgarian fighter. As mentioned before, the Krusher held his own with Canelo for quite some time. On the bright side though, Kovalev will represent by far the most accomplished opponent of his professional journey. By the same token, it will be telling to see how Pulev performs himself due to coming off a 15-month stint of inactivity.
Even that January 29, 2021 bout was more than a year after the previous bout with DeShon Webster. Only time will tell how he is fated to handle himself. The upcoming match will not only test Kovalev’s gas tank but his fortitude in a new division. No longer campaigning at light heavyweight, the Krusher will be making his premiere at cruiserweight. Naturally, the idea is that no longer having to cut the additional weight will benefit him in the ring. If Kovalev struggles or is beaten by Pulev, this would more than likely signal the official end of his relevant boxing career. Time will tell.
