Will Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford Save 2025?
The upcoming super fight featuring undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez against top pound-for-pound fighter Terence “Bud” Crawford is important in more ways than one. As boxing fans and pundits count down to September 13, the sport of boxing needs this fight to be one for the ages.
Canelo vs Crawford has to live up to the hype of being called a super fight. The sport has been lacking a fight that can move the needle. Yes, we had solid fights such as Oleksandr Usyk vs Daniel Dubois for the undisputed heavyweight crown. Then there was Jaron Ennis vs Eimantas Stanionis in a welterweight unification, Chris Eubank Jr vs Conor Benn, and an Artur Beterbiev vs Dmitry Bivol light heavyweight unification. Nonetheless, those fights failed to move the needle enough.
In addition, there were disappointing performances from Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia, which canceled out their rematch. Multi-divisional champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis disappointed fans by choosing to face YouTuber Jake Paul instead of rematching Lamont Roach. Not to mention the countless number of bad judgments that put a spotlight on the sport in a negative manner.
Canelo vs Crawford has to be so spectacular that it will make up for an abysmal 2025. All eyes will be on these two top-level fighters, and we can hope they deliver.
