Canelo Alvarez Gates Fighting Benavidez Behind a Big Payday

Undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (60-2-2, 39KO) has boxing fans chirping like birds at sunrise. He claims a fight with two-time WBC champion David “El Monstruo” Benavidez (28-0, 24KO) is possible for the right price.

As the traditional Cinco De Mayo weekend boxing match featuring Canelo versus Jaime Munguia approaches, the Mexican champion is doing the typical media rounds.

THE PRICE MUST BE RIGHT

While speaking on ESPN’s First Take, Alvarez was open to possibly fighting Benavidez next. In addition, he emphasized being able to beat El Monstruo in the ring for the right price tag.

“We’ll see, why not? If the money is correct, why not? I can fight him Saturday night too . . . I beat that guy. If the money is correct, I fight that guy and I beat that guy the same night.”

This isn’t the first time Canelo has mentioned wanting a hefty payday to fight Benavidez. In March, he came under scrutiny after asking for a King’s Ransom to make the fight. Some fans and pundits remain skeptical if the fight will ever happen.

Benavidez is moving up and is set to face one-time WBC light heavyweight champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk on June 15. He has vowed to punish the former champion, for being aligned with Eddy Reynoso, who trains Canelo. Furthermore, the Arizona fighter is willing to return to super middleweight only for a fight against the undisputed champion.

Alvarez is saying all the right things when the cameras are on. Yet, his actions don’t always line up with his words. Providing he is victorious against Munguia, the boxing community must apply unwavering pressure on him for a September showdown against Benavidez.
