Now a two-division undisputed champion, Claressa “T-Rex” Shields (11-0, 2KO) didn’t mince her words regarding who can get it next. Of course after she makes her UFC debut this summer. After dominating former IBF junior middleweight champion Marie Eve Dicaire, T-Rex was asked about a possible bout with lightweight undisputed champion Katie Taylor.

Apparently there have been talks of Shields moving down to welterweight for the mega fight to take place in the UK. An “improbable” event but not necessarily “impossible!”

“I got a nice butt and I will lose that going to 147. So they [Eddie Hearn and Katie Taylor] need to come with that doe if they want me to drop to 147 to fight Katie Taylor!”

This comes as news as the two fighters currently fight three divisions away from each other. A natural super middleweight, Shields is doing everything she can to make it within the junior middleweight limit. A cut seven more pounds down to welterweight is a tall order. This is one of many reasons why an all-undisputed clash against former undisputed welterweight champion Cecilia Braekhus didn’t materialize.

In 2019, T-Rex journeyed to junior middleweight with the intent to get Braekhus to move up for the fight. When Braekhus refused after initially agreeing to do so, that started a beef still active to this day. Therefore unless she really wants to beat Taylor, the move to welterweight doesn’t seem likely.

However, a bout between arguably the two top women pound-for-pound in the sport would be exciting. Two women who are considered two of the best female amateurs ever. In addition, they have won three Olympic gold medals combined. Both became the next two undisputed champions in women’s boxing history after Braekhus, one after the other. The brash and confident Shields vs the quiet but extremely skilled Taylor would be a huge fight for women’s boxing.

But don’t get your hopes up!
