Two-divisional champion Shakur “Fearless” Stevenson (19-0, 9KO) is still looking for a dance partner after three fighters declined to fight him. Former IBF junior lightweight champion Joe Cordina (15-0, 9KO) has thrown Fearless a bone by offering a catchweight bout in 2023.

THE BACKSTORY

There is some history between these two fighters. Immediately following Cordina’s savage knockout over Kenichi Ogawa to win the title on June 4, Fearless took to social media showing interest in wanting the fight. Furthermore, he was willing to travel into enemy territory to make it happen.

During an interview on iFL TV, the former champion from Cardiff, Wales explained the motivation behind wanting to fight Stevenson.

“Twice he called me out over socials . . . a couple of weeks after my fight, someone sent me a radio interview he done. So, I was listening to that, and he’s basically saying he’d only come to the UK for Joe. It’s still a big fight, and we could do it at catchweight.”

“I want to fight him clearly for the reason he called me out.”

Of course, Stevenson, never backing down from a challenge, swiftly responded by welcoming the catchweight fight.

On October 22, Cordina was stripped of the title after suffering an injury while training to face mandatory challenger Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov. The organization decided to have Rakhimov face Zelfa Barrett for the title, with Cordina getting the chance to regain the title upon returning.

Looking to regain the title he never lost in the ring, Cordina is laser-focused on Rakhimov.
