Daniel Dubois Melts Trevor Bryan with a Nasty Left Hook
In his latest in-ring battle, top ranked heavyweight contender “Dynamite” Daniel Dubois (18-1, 17 KO’s) accepted a pivotal match-up that would possibly decide the direction of his career. He took on undefeated regular WBA heavyweight champion Trevor Bryan (22-1, 15 KO’s) in an attempt to snatch his secondary title.
Prior to Bryan, Dubois toughest and most meaning fight came against Joe Joyce. At the time of that collision, both pugilists were undefeated and on the fast track to a title shot. Even more commendable, neither fighter was required to accept the dangerous bout, yet, they did simply to display their confidence in their skills.
Dynamite would come up short in the dustup. Not only did he lose he had his orbital bone fractured and was forced to retire on his stool. As one would expect Dubois would have to weather the storm of boxing fans labeling him a “quitter”. Since that time, the UK bruiser has bounced back with two solid knockout wins over Bogdan Dinu and Joe Cusumano. Currently he is ranked #1 (WBA) and #6 (WBO).
For his part, Bryan had an interesting reign as a champion having first toppled BJ Flores by fourth round stoppage to claim the interim WBA heavyweight strap well back in 2018. He would then remain out of action for nearly three years before defeating a completely used up Bermane Stiverne in 2021. Earlier this year, the regular WBA champ was stretched to the cards and had to settle for a split decision win over little known Jonathan Guidry. Given his recent spotty activity level and Dynamite’s youth, despite being the champion, many felt that this match was Dubois’ to lose.
ONE WAY ACTION
After talking more trash than a pissed off Joe Pesci in any mob movie, Bryan slid through the ropes warm, jelly-donut soft. His arms were formless and midsection gelatinous. Even worse, in this case, you could judge a book by its cover. From the very first round, the younger, fitter Dubois pursued the champ behind a menacing jab and competent power shots. Before he could escape the first round the UK bruiser had buzzed and began roughing him up.
It took until the fourth round for the inevitable to finally catch up with the regular champion. It was there that Dynamite forcibly reset Bryan’s nervous system with an icy, single left hook. The shot snatched his head around and caused Bryan to fall flat on his face like a dropped door at Home Depot. Bryan tried to get up but only managed to wiggle and flop around like he was in a sealed sleeping bag. Recognizing his deteriorated condition, referee Bill Clancy first called a halt to the bout then helped Bryan to an upright position.
This was an excellent win for Dubois. Now armed with a regular WBA title, the UK boxer now has a direct line to fight the winner of unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk vs Anthony Joshua II. This is due the WBA’s own vow to eliminate all their secondary titles by matching the two champions in each division with one another.
It will be interesting to see how Dubois busies himself in the meantime
