Emotional Role Reversal for Ben Davison
With less than two weeks to go, the boxing world is buzzing in anticipation for Wilder v Fury 2. Their premiere scrap on December 1, 2018 ended in bitter controversy. Although now, both are ready to set the record straight. However, for UK chief second Ben Davison, the rematch will be one emotional and somewhat stressful affair.
When Tyson “The Gypsy King” Fury (29-0-1, 20 KO’s) first took on Wilder, Davison held the position as his head trainer. Not only were they linked professionally, both men will tell you that they were, and remain, great friends outside of the ring. In fact, Fury will admit that Davison played a tremendous role in assisting him in overcoming his depression and returning to the sport.
CHANGING OF THE GUARD
Yet, regardless of their outside the ring relationship, and past accomplishments, Fury opted not to use Davison as his head trainer for the critical run-back fight. Instead, the Gypsy King has slid Javan “Sugar” Hill, the nephew of the late great trainer Emanuel Stewart, into the immensely important position.
Since the switch in trainers has become public knowledge, Fury and Davison insist that they are and will remain good mates. Nevertheless, Davison has admitted that it will be difficult to watch the Gypsy King do his things from the sidelines. While granting an exclusive interview with iFL TV, the former chief second went into greater detail on the matter.
“It’s going to be emotional and very difficult for me because when I’m in the corner and I’m coaching somebody, I can give the advice that I feel needs to be given. So emotionally I don’t have emotions. I’m focused on what information needs to be given. Watching from the side, I’ll be all over the place, anxiety, the lot!
I hate seeing people I care about boxing and not being able to give the information I feel needs to be given. But in terms of texts, we’ve been sharing a few texts, but I want to keep the conversation away from boxing because I don’t want to say something that might be conflicting against what someone else is giving him.”
It’s quite understandable that watching the fight as a ticket holder will be a trying time for Davison. Yet Davison, like all Fury fans, can only cross their fingers and hope for the best at this point in the game. Although, it will be rather intriguing to see what version of Fury comes out while under the tutelage of Javan Hill.
