De La Hoya Pushes Back On WBC Ordering Stevenson vs Zepeda
Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya doesn’t care that the WBC organization ordered his fighter William “Camaron” Zepeda (31-0, 27KO) to face WBC lightweight champion Shakur “Fearless” Stevenson (22-0, 10KO).
The boxing community is buzzing as the President of the WBC, Mauricio Sulaiman, revealed the organization has ordered Stevenson and Zepeda to square off in the ring.
These two fighters have been on a collision course as Camaron has wanted to face Fearless for quite some time. De La Hoya has mentioned the Mexican’s next fight will be for the title with either Stevenson or WBO champion Denys Berinchyk.
WILL HE DUCK THE CHAMPION?
After hearing the news, the WBC champion took to social media inquiring about Team Zepeda’s intentions.
Well, it didn’t take long for De La Hoya to issue a statement that basically put the brakes on the whole idea. In addition, he made it clear that Zepeda has options.
Some fans and pundits will view this as Team Zepeda looking to duck a fight with Stevenson. In fairness, De La Hoya has stated a willingness to make the fight only if the New Jersey native signs with Golden Boy.
After defeating Artem Harutyunyan in his last fight under the Top Rank umbrella, Stevenson is a free agent looking for a home. Several promotional companies are looking to pick up the talented champion who has been listening to all offers.
So like it or not, De La Hoya has a point when looking at it from a business angle. Without any kind of financial return on their investment, no promoter would put their top fighter in the ring with Stevenson right now.
With so much drama on the horizon, 3kingsboxing will continue to monitor the situation.
