Danny Dignum Wakes Up and Disposes of Grant Dennis with Ease
At the York Hall in London, England, rising British middleweight contender Danny Dignum (14-0-1, 8 KOs) took on Grant Dennis (17-4, 3 KOs) in a ten-round middleweight contest. Dignum is a southpaw of promise within British boxing circles. The 29-year-old from Essex, England won the vacant WBO European middleweight title with a fifth-round TKO over Conrad Cummings in November of 2019. After three defenses of the title, he’s ranked fourth by the WBO and fifteenth by the WBA at 160 pounds. He faced a Dennis who was regarded as a low-level, substandard opponent.
A SLOW START
A clear underdog going in, Dennis was on the move early and often. Dignum found it a little difficult catching up to his opponent. After a clash of heads resulted in a cut over his right eye, the southpaw sprang into action and fought with more fire.
WAKING UP AND TAKING HIM OUT
Dignum got the jab going and was doing a better job of cutting off the ring. He began to find a home for the straight left hand and right hooks. At the mid-way point of round six, a right uppercut put Dennis down on one knee. A follow-up assault put Dennis down two more times. With twenty-nine seconds left in the round, the referee had seen enough and waved a halt to the contest.
In truth, you can’t get much from the victor with this win. Up against a vastly inferior opponent, he did what was expected of him. Dignum is targeting the WBO middleweight belt. After the fight, his handlers suggested that a WBO title eliminator could be upcoming.
