Dmitry Bivol Gains Nothing From Rematching Canelo Alvarez
If he grabs the undisputed light heavyweight crown, WBA champion Dmitry Bivol (23-0, 12KO) should reject any proposed rematch offer with unified super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (62-2-2, 39KO).
On September 14, Canelo easily retained the titles in the classic Mexican versus Puerto Rico rivalry against “The Chosen One” Edgar Berlanga. Still the biggest draw in the sport, the Mexican has set his eyes on finally rematching Bivol.
ESPN reported Canelo wants to fight Bivol in May 2025, provided the Russian is victorious against unified champion Artur Beterbiev on October 15. In May 2022, Bivol shocked the boxing world with a victory over boxing’s biggest earner. He became the second alongside Hall of Fame Inductee Floyd Mayweather to hand Alvarez a loss.
BEEN THERE DONE THAT-PASS
Bivol’s team member took a direct shot at Canelo on social media.
Honestly, the WBA champion and his team shouldn’t entertain a rematch. For one, there is nothing to gain in doing it at this point, especially knowing that boxing fans won’t give him credit. After defeating Canelo the first time, Bivol’s status in the sport never changed. Fans praised Canelo more in defeat for taking a risk than the WBA champion for being victorious.
Furthermore, Canelo is no longer an undisputed champion, meaning Bivol would have to put up his titles and get nothing in return. The fight this author prefers to see is Bivol taking on the WBC interim titlist David “Monster” Benavidez. There is a lot of history between these two fighters, as fans still talk about their sparring sessions.
Before we get too far ahead, Bivol must get past the dangerous power puncher Beterbiev, and that won’t be easy. The unified light heavyweight champion shouldn’t be counted out regardless of his advanced age.
