Jaron Ennis Is Looking To Have A Big Year in 2022
The entire boxing community knows that top-rated welterweight Jaron “Boots” Ennis (28-0, 26ko) is on the heels of all of the champions in the division. Moreover, he is considered a high-risk, low-reward fighter that many believe the top guys are not eager to step in the ring with him. However, Ennis has a solution to being avoided: becoming number one.
THE PATH TO A CHAMPIONSHIP
For the past two years, the Philadelphia native has been climbing the rankings like a video game player on god mode. He ran through the lower tier competition like milk through a person that’s lactose intolerant. Boots even stepped up the level of competition in 2021.
He took on former IBF junior welterweight champion Sergey Lipinets in April 2021. Boots smoked the former champion with ease, landing a barrage of debilitating punches before hitting a two-piece right hook, left uppercut combination that ended the fight in the sixth round.
Next, Boots took on former title contender Thomas Dulorme in October 2021. What was supposed to be a big test for the young rising welterweight was nothing more than a first-round beatdown. Ennis started feeling confident at this point and called out the champions of the division. The fans also believe in Ennis, with some expressing that he possesses the ability to beat both unified champion Errol Spence Jr and WBO champion Terence Crawford.
During an interview on The Last Stand Podcast, Ennis doubled down on wanting a top fighter to set him up for a title shot by the end of 2022.
“I want a top-three to top-five guy. That way, it would put me in line for a world title by the end of year or the beginning of 2022.”
ENNIS WILL NOT BE DENIED
The general consensus inside the boxing community is that Ennis will not get a title shot until the top leave. Boots gave a simple solution to the problem, in an intermission interview during the fight between newly crowned WBC featherweight champion Mark Magsayo and Gary Russell Jr.
“I feel like I am ready for a title now, and 2022 will be a big year for me. It’s going to be the best year of my career, make sure you all tune in. I will be world champion.”
“They can’t avoid me if I am number one [contender] so I gotta be number one. And, once I get that number one spot, ain’t no denying me.”
