Felix Sturm Defeats Timo Rost By Unanimous Decision

Stepping into the ring for the first time since March 2016, former WBO and WBA World Middleweight champion Felix Sturm (41-5-3, 18 KOs) defeated Timo Rost (10-1-2, 3 KOs) by unanimous decision (100-90, 100-93 and 99-91) at the Universum Gym, Hamburg, Germany.

During his days as champion, Sturm was known for his boxing skills and sporting of the best jabs in the sport. He used that left stick to set the pace early.

As the fight went on, Sturm opened up his arsenal. He began to utilize the right hand and body-work as part of his attack. Rost’s face was showing the effects of the punishment as he started to bleed from the nose in round four.

The tone that was set early from Sturm continued throughout. Even at age 41, the former champ still had the sharpness and displayed the combination punching of his youth. He was tattooing Rost with combinations to the head and body, landing every punch in the book.

Rost was a willing fighter and competed hard. However, this fight was someone facing a much more talented and skilled opponent. Overall, it was a very solid performance from Sturm, who did not look rusty or out of place for a fighter of his advanced age. He joins Sergio Martinez (53-3-2, 30 KOs) among ex-world champions who have decided to come back attempting to reach their former glory.

It is unknown what is next up for Sturm. He told local media following his victory over Rost he has 5-6 fights left in the tank. Fighting at super middleweight, it is admittedly a long shot seeing him reaching the world championship level again.
