Angel Fierro Knocks Out Cristian Bielma in the Fourth Round

WBO #8 ranked lightweight prospect Angel “Tashiro” Fierro (18-1-1, 14ko) sought to build momentum going into a tough bout against Cristian “El Gato Gordo” Bielma (18-3-1, 7ko). In the end, they produced a fan-friendly affair.

Bielma is not a pushover by any means at all, and he always comes to fight. He has a good amateur background, having competed in the World Series of Boxing. His resume includes victories over undefeated prospects Oliver Quintana and Osvaldo Maldonado. El Gato Gordo would lose the rematch to Quintana back in 2019.

Fierro entered the fight as a man on a mission. The only blemish on his resume is a razor-close majority decision loss to Alex Martin back in 2020. However, he would bounce back with two spectacular knockouts, including a come-from-behind meme-style sixth-round stoppage over former WBA ‘regular’ junior lightweight champion Alberto Machado.

The fight started with Bielma coming forward and finding a home for the right-hand. His awkward assault seemed to confuse Fierro. As the fight continued, it was clear Tashiro was looking to end it with one big punch.

Both fighters started trading in the center of the ring. Fierro landed a barrage of punches, putting Bielma on the defense. However, El Gato Gordo came roaring back with sharp punches to the body and two hard overhand rights.

HERE COMES THE BOOM

In the fourth round, Fierro, the protégé of Hall of Fame fighter Erik Morales, finally settled down and was able to catch the timing of Bielma.  He was landing a hard left hook to the body and a pulverizing right-hand that had Bielma out on his feet as he turned his back, prompting the referee to call for the stoppage.

Fierro became the first man to stop the iron-chinned Bielma. During the post-fight interview, the young man wasted little time in calling out Devin Haney.

“I want to fight in 2022 and I want an opportunity to fight against Devin Haney for the WBC championship.”
