Stevenson Says Martin Fight Broke Down Over Purse Split

Fallout continues following news that negotiations failed for a match between two-division world champion Shakur Stevenson (20-0, 10 KOs) and highly-ranked lightweight contender Frank “The Ghost” Martin (18-0, 12 KOs). Now it’s becoming a verbal blame game between the two fighters as to why it’s not occurring.

THE TIMELINE OF EVENTS

The WBC ordered a bout between Stevenson and Martin for the vacant WBC lightweight title. But word leaked that Martin suddenly decided to walk away and withdrew from the ordered contest. Those events led Stevenson to accuse Martin of ducking a fight with him. The Ghost said that was far from the case.

In a now-deleted social media post, the two-division champion gave his reason why he believed Martin decided to withdraw from the fight:

Stevenson says Martin wanted a 50/50 split

Stevenson apparently was unaware that folks have the option to screen-share because Martin heard about what Stevenson had to say, and responded in kind. That has led to back-and-forth allegations between the two fighters on social media.

Martin and Stevenson dispute each other on the issue of a purse split

If what Martin said is true, why would Stevenson accuse Martin of demanding an even split? At this point, you don’t know who to believe. It has caused quite a reaction from fight fans.

The shame of it all is that, of this writing, the fight is not happening. Stevenson and Martin are two of the better fighters in the division. It’s a fight that boxing enthusiasts wanted to see. Hopefully, cooler heads will prevail and they can make the fight a reality.
