Fury: I’m going to take him out a third time!
On February 22, 2020 Tyson “The Gypsy King” Fury (30-0-1, 21 KO’s) shocked the world in his action-packed rematch with Deontay “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder (42-1-1, 41 KO’s). Fury accomplished this by launching a brutal assault on Wilder. Few imagined that the Gypsy King would use such a tactic and even fewer thought that Fury would usurp Wilder’s WBC title by way of seventh round knockout. Nevertheless, that is exactly what happened.
Immediately after the prizefight, countless fight fans all over the globe began dreaming up a fight between Fury and WBO, WBA, IBF and IBO world heavyweight champion Anthony “AJ” Joshua (23-1, 21 KO’s). This was the one and final bout needed to crown one undisputed heavyweight champion. However, this fight could not be made a reality because of a preexisting rematch clause that Wilder opted to utilize.
NO STEP ASIDE MONEY HERE!
Despite the legally binding stipulation and both of Fury’s co-promoters, Bob Arum and Frank Warren, reaffirming the impossibility of the unification bout, many still kept calling for it. Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn was even heard to say that he would pursue offering Wilder some step aside money. Now, in a recent interview with The Daily, Tyson Fury himself has obliterated all the speculation of offering Wilder any form of step aside money.
“Some newspaper reported that he wanted ten million to step outside…but I’m not paying him no money to step aside, I’d rather take his scalp again! I’ll beat him in the ring, that’s how I’ll get him out the way, I wouldn’t pay him. I wouldn’t pay him two million to step aside, I’d rather give him another battering, again!”
“I’m going to take him out for a third time, hopefully at the end of the year and then we’re going to go into 2021 for the biggest fight in boxing history. Between two undefeated British heavyweights, me and AJ, and we’re going to battle it out for all the gold!”
“There used to be a three-headed monster in this division, it was me, Wilder and Joshua. And then [Andy] Ruiz knocked out Joshua, burst that bubble, broke him in. Then I broke in the Bronze Bomber and then three become two, two became one and now I am a standalone soldier!
“They all need to come through me now, and it’s not an easy task because I guard the gate!”
NO END IN SIGHT
By the sound of it, Fury is riding high and fearing no man on the heavyweight landscape! In fact, when asked, the jovial big man does not see an end of his reign anywhere near in sight.
“I’ve been thinking about it and initially I had three fights left on me contract. So I got two fights left right now, Wilder and Joshua. But I am just going to keep going because there is nothing else to do really.
“For me I’m 31 years old, fit as a fiddle, in great mental spirits yeah, I train everyday three or four times a day for fun and it’s like, what else am I going to do with me life?”
“So there are plenty of fighters out there for me to beat up on. You got Dillian Whyte, you got Jarrell Miller, you got Pulev, you got Ruiz, you got Ortiz, you got Dubois, you got Joyce, there’s loads!”
This all certainly sounds wonderful, but first we have to get past the maddening standstill imposed by COVID-19. Then we will see what Fury and Wilder have to offer each other. Following their trilogy, we can resume this business of establishing a undisputed heavyweight champion. Should be a fun ride while it lasts!
