Garcia elects to challenge his mandatory
According to sources, IBF and WBC Lightweight champion Mikey Garcia (39-0, 30KOs) will defend his titles against IBF mandatory, Richard Commey (27-2, 24KOs).
Garcia, a four-division champion, recently made headlines by publicly expressing his desire to yet again move up in weight. He sought after welterweight boogeyman and IBF champion, Errol Spence Jr (24-0, 21KOs). To the dismay of many fans, a potential match-up with Commey would put Garcia/Spence on hold; presumably until early next year.
Commey on the other hand, has patiently waited for his opportunity again. He suffered two split-decision loses to Robert Easter Jr. and Denis Shafikov but has since gotten himself back to winning form, racking up three consecutive victories.
One of which, was an IBF title eliminator against undefeated Alejandro Luna. Commey would go on to knock Luna out in the sixth round, therefore, solidifying his spot as the mandatory.
In addition, he agreed to step aside and allow then IBF champion Robert Easter Jr to challenge Mikey Garcia in a unification match. The agreement provided Commey a spot on the Andre Berto vs. Devon Alexader under-card and played a role in the unification fight being able to take place.
While this fight may not be what the fans want, there’s no denying Commey has waited his turn.
