DANNY GARCIA WBC MANDATORY: HOW LONG WILL HE HAVE TO WAIT?
Former two-division world champion Danny Garcia is back in the drivers seat for a world title opportunity. Recently the WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has come out revealing that the former WBC welterweight champion is the next up to challenge the unbeaten unified champion Errol Spence (26-0, 21KOs).
Originally set to face Spence on January 25, those plans went up in smoke after Spence was involved in a horrific car accident. That led Garcia to instead facing fringe contender Ivan Redkach (23-5-1, 18KOs) in Brooklyn, New York, where he won a unanimous decision.
ASSESSING SPENCE’S OPTIONS
Holding two welterweight belts, Spence has a plethora of options. He could partake in unification bouts against either Manny Pacquiao or Terence Crawford. Pacquiao has the WBA title, while Crawford holds the WBO belt. The latter would no doubt draw the most excitement and most appeal. Furthermore, if those bouts don’t materialize, two mandatories lay ahead for him.
The IBF mandatory is Qudratillo Abduqaxorov (17-0, 9KOs). On paper, that figures to be the smart play considering the damage Spence took in his accident.
WHAT DOES GARCIA DO IN THE MEANTIME?
Back to Garcia, who is eagerly awaiting his shot at the double champion from Texas. At the moment, everything is on hold due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic that has either forced the postponement or cancellation of all things sports and entertainment wise.
Garcia could get his opportunity if Spence elects to forego a tuneup and head right into an intriguing clash with the former champion. More tuneups could be in store for Garcia, as he looks to keep his mandatory status in tact.
Only time will reveal the next move for each man.
