Devin Haney Calls Out Javier Fortuna

These days Devin “The Dream” Haney (24-0, 15 KO’s) has found himself indoors and primarily on lock down. Like the rest of the planet, COVID-19 has essentially forced the world’s population to pick their ball up, go home and stay there until further notice. Yet, while Haney is a great deal more stationary this doesn’t mean that he is idle.

Following his November 9, 2019 bout with Alfredo Santiago, the Dream discovered that he would require surgery to repair damage in his right shoulder. As the result, the WBC world lightweight champion was swiftly reclassified as ‘champion in recess’ by the WBC. It was explained that this action was necessary because due to his surgery and subsequent rehab, Haney would not be able to defend his title in a reasonable amount of time.

Clearly, Devin Haney feels that it’s time to step off the injured reserves list and head back into the ring.

HANEY CALLS OUT FORTUNA

Shortly after the WBC declared Haney to be a champion in recess, they ordered #1 Javier “El Abejon” Francisco (35-2-1, 24 KO’s) to fight #2 Luke Campbell (20-3, 16 KO’s) for his vacant regular title. Upon his return, Haney would receive an immediate shot at the victor. However, it now seems that the Dream is not content to wait for Fortuna and Campbell to mix it up.

Via his Twitter account, Devin Haney straight up called out Javier Fortuna in his next bout. The Dream let it be known that he was ready to defend his title and, therefore, his time as a champion in recess was at an end. It will be enlightening to see how this plays out.

In all actuality, prior to Haney’s surgery, the WBC initially ordered a match between the Dream and his mandatory challenger, Fortuna. From this stand point, setting up a prizefight between Haney and Fortuna was always supposed to be the original game plan. Obviously, if this is the route resumed, it will be a bitter pill for Luke Campbell, who will find himself out-maneuvered of a title shot.
