David Haye calls out Tyson Fury!
Former unified cruiserweight champion and WBA regular heavyweight champion David “Hayemaker” Haye (28-4, 26KOs) made his return to boxing after a three-year retirement. His opponent, Joe Fournier, a businessman turned boxer, wasn’t considered a legitimate threat. Still, he gave Haye an opportunity to shake off some ring-rust.
After his six-round unanimous decision win, the former champion would proclaim he’s ready to mix it up with none other than the WBC heavyweight champion, “The Gypsy King” Tyson Fury. Obviously, this callout was met with skepticism and rightfully so. Haye is now 40 years old and looked horrible in his last two ring outings against Tony Bellew.
HAYE BELIEVES FURY KNOWS THE DANGER OF FIGHTING HIM!
“Tyson Fury is the only guy I really want to come back for to be honest, I know I got his Kryptonite. I know I can come back and be sharp. The jabs that I was landing on Joe, I would be landing on Tyson Fury all night but it would have a big right hand coming right after it. I didn’t want to show what I had. I didn’t want to show the “Hayemaker.” Hopefully, he’s confident to jump in there with me to give the fans what they want.”
Haye was also straightforward on how to get Fury in the ring with him.
“Get in the ring with him, that’s it. Physically get in the ring. Once I’m in the ring, I know what he sees in me when he sees me.
I know how he thinks. He thinks this is the right time to get me, and that’s great. Yes, it’s the perfect time. I’m 40-years-old, inactivity, six rounds. You can’t make anything out of that. I know what I got, and it’s way more than he can handle.”
REVISITING AN OLD RIVALRY!
Ironically enough, Haye and Fury were scheduled to fight each other back in September of 2013. Unfortunately, a cut sustained by Haye a week prior to their bout forced him to withdraw. The bout was rescheduled for February of 2014. Yet again, it was Haye who would suffer another injury, this time hurting his shoulder.
David Haye is way past his prime and has always been a big talker. His comments regarding wanting to get in the ring with Fury will surely be dissected. Does he really believe that he can beat Fury or is he simply chasing one last big payday as a fighter? Regardless of what it is, I highly doubt this fight happens. Fury has to take care of business against Deontay Wilder on October 9. If victorious, then there is a huge payday opportunity with unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua in 2022. That fight would be for all the belts in an undisputed showdown.
