Robert Helenius Welcomes his Underdog Status Against Deontay Wilder

With less than two weeks to go until his October 15 showdown with former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder (42-2-1, 41KOs), heavyweight contender Robert “The Nordic Nightmare” Helenius (31-3, 20KOs) is a significant underdog.

EMBRACING THE UNDERDOG LABEL

Oftentimes, fighters who are tagged the underdog will let it bother them. However, when it comes to Helenius, he could care less, as he told reporters.

“I like being the underdog! It kind of wakes me up in a better way. I need to concentrate better, do better for myself.”

The two men are considered friends and have sparred extensively over the last few years. While there is mutual respect on both sides, they have also expressed confidence that they will be victorious come fight time. For Helenius, he knows he has everything to gain and nothing to lose, so he embraces the underdog role.

Underdog or not, The Nordic Nightmare heads into the fight having won two consecutive fights over Adam Kownacki, with the second one coming on the undercard of Wilder-Fury 3. That is compared to Wilder, who hasn’t tasted victory since 2019 when he stopped Luis Ortiz in their rematch. Regardless of the outcome, I’m sure both fighters will bring their A-game in what could become a slugfest!
