Kenny Porter Speaks on Being Recruited for Team Tank Davis
Following many ups and down and failed fight attempts, Regular WBA lightweight champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis (28-0, 26 KO’s) and “King” Ryan Garcia (23-0, 19 KO’s) will finally meet in the ring. The two will test their might with one another on April 22. When staging their last batch of press conferences, it was revealed that Davis injected a weight and rehydration clause into the fight contract. Given that he’s never done this before, many fans and insiders believe this may stem from a lack of confidence. Now, it’s also been discovered that Team Davis has recruited Kenny Porter to camp as well.
ALL HANDS-ON DECK!
While some may find this news surprising, this is not the first time that Porter has worked with Tank. Porter also helped Davis prepare for his duel with Isaac Cruz. Kenny Porter, the father and former trainer of two-time welterweight champion Shawn Porter, does bring a wealth of boxing knowledge and experience to the table. Yet, even though Porter is lending a hand, Tank’s longtime chief second, Calvin Ford, is still maintaining his role as lead trainer in camp, as he explained to Fight Hype.
“I’m going to say it says even more about Tank because Tank came to me personally, so yeah the team, Kenny Elis, Calvin Ford, those guys are doing an excellent job. I’m watching what they’re doing every day, I’m studying them as well as I am studying Tank. But I will say that it speaks volumes about Tank’s maturity now that he actually came to me, spoke to me and we had these conversations and it materialized into what we are doing.”
EYE FOR TALENT
Clearly Porter, who has worked with a number of outstanding talents such as the Charlo brothers, Errol Spence and even Manny Pacquiao, to name a few, is highly impressed with Tank.
“Not only did I have my hands on some of your top amateurs that I’ve worked with, the Errol Spence’s of the world, the Charlo brothers of the world . . . on the pro level, I’ve been in two different camps with Manny Pacquiao. I’ve done camps and done leads in Sugar Shane Mosley’s corner and we were successful in the ring . . . From what I am seeing in Tank, nobody beats Tank! Nobody is going to beat him in this weight class, if he decides to move to a higher weight class, 140, he’s got that factor that it takes.”
It will be interesting to see what fruit this collaboration produces this April. Yet, no matter what the ultimate result, 3Kings Boxing will be here to report the news!
