WBC Titlist Lester Martinez Could Face Mbilli vs Canelo Winner

In a super middleweight showdown, Lester Martinez defeated Immanuwel Aleem for the WBC interim title. With this victory, the interim titlist is in line to face the WBC champion Christian Mbilli vs Saul “Canelo” Alvarez winner. In addition, a high-profile fight with Jaime Munguia is also a viable option.

Martinez (20-0-1, 16KO) stepped up his game and put those boxing skills on full display. He fought behind the jab beautifully while using angles and defense to control the pace of the fight. Even when Aleem found success, the Guatemalan quickly returned fire. In the end, the judges’ scorecards were 120-108, 119-109, and 118-110, in favor of Martinez.

A BIG FIGHT IS NEXT

When looking ahead, the obvious choice for Team Martinez is to face either Mbilli or Canelo, provided that the fight takes place. He would like nothing more than to rematch the WBC champion, considering their first encounter ended in a draw.

A fight with Canelo would be a major financial boost. Given that he trains with retired fighter Terence Crawford’s old trainer, Brian “Bomac” McIntyre, a Canelo bout makes for an intriguing story. Especially knowing Crawford would undoubtedly be giving Martinez tips on how to win.

If he wants to remain busy, he can fight with WBC #5-rated Munguia, who is set to face Jose Resendiz on May 2. A fight with Munguia would be a fan-friendly affair, considering the all-action, come-forward style of the Mexican contender.

Regardless of whatever path he takes, a big fight is definitely on the horizon.
