Teofimo Lopez Takes An Uninformed Racial Angle At Andre Ward
Clearly, leaving bigotry and distastefulness in 2024 was not in the cards for WBO junior welterweight champion Teofimo “The Takeover” Lopez (21-1, 13 KO’s). Right at the top of 2025 he is already back at his raunchy, racial, antagonistic antics. This time, Lopez hopped onto the comment section of former fighter and current podcaster Andre Ward. While appearing to solicit an interview, The Takeover questioned if the show is only for blacks.
While Ward was a long-time professional fighter, and then a long time boxing broadcast analyst, he is new to the podcast game and his show The Art of Ward. Even still, Ward has sat down and conversed with a diverse cast, including Caleb Plant, Eddie Hearn and Edgar Berlanga. There is little doubt that Lopez knew this.
Overall, his racist tangent began in late 2024 when The Takeover made monkey and banana references to Gervonta Davis and Terence Crawford. Since then he has been questioned on a slew of platforms about his off-kilter statements. Not to mention the gushing river of condemning fans in his various social media comment sections. Bringing this nonsense to Ward, who is known as a respectable and straight-laced individual, makes this all the more tactless.
TIME KEEPS ON TICKING…
On the one hand, Lopez is an elite fighter and well paid by the living standards of the average American. When measured against the cream of the crop in the sport however, Lopez is struggling to keep up. Unlike Ryan Garcia or Anthony Joshua, for example, The Takeover is not the darling of any promotional company. Truthfully, with all the shenanigans that he’s perpetrated, his Top Rank backers probably would like to see him go.
There is no large contingent of fans saying he is the pound for pound best, or even the clear king of the division. Lopez ping-pong’s between bragging about his money and openly crying in his beer when publicly lamenting his scrawny paydays to date. On top of it all, The Takeover doesn’t even have a solid homebase to fall on. This bitter reality has left Lopez a morally tainted fighter with no country, trying to tread water in an ever swelling ocean of contempt. For his sake, and ours. Let’s hope that Lopez just cleans up his act and gets back to turning in exciting performances.
