Frank Martin Eyeing a Tank Davis Fight in the Near Future
Within the lightweight division resides a hungry, dangerous southpaw by the name of Frank “The Ghost” Martin (16-0, 12 KO’s). On December 17, Martin will slide into the ring to face fellow crafty and capable boxer Michel Rivera. Even better, their showdown was recently elevated to a title eliminator by the WBA. Of course, Martin is focused on his impending battle with Rivera but it’s near impossible to not think about the implications of a victory which would obviously be leading him to a potential clash with ‘regular’ WBA 135-pound champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis (27-0, 25 KO’s).
Naturally a duel with such a headlining name as Davis would be a great look for Martin at this stage of his career. Yet, as he told to Fight Hype in a recent Q&A he’s already technically shared the ring with Tank.
“I want to get this fight with Rivera out of the way, and then I feel like that fight with me and Tank will be a great, great fight!
“With me sparring him, sparring is sparring you know? You got good days in sparring, you have bad days, so you can’t always look at sparring like, ‘I did this and I did that’ because a guy could show up totally different the night of a fight. It’s cool that I got to get in there and spar with him to feel the power and feel the speed and stuff, it was good to be able to do that.”
HURDLES TO HOP
Clearly there is a heavily stocked minefield between Martin and a prizefight with Tank Davis. As previously mentioned, The Ghost has his own very dangerous fight to navigate versus Michel Rivera. Likewise, Tank is booked for a January 7 fight against Hector Luis Garcia and, if successful, a followup bout with Ryan Garcia. So at least three fights have to happen before Martin gets the mega-fight he wants. Luckily he believes that all the right guys will keep winning!
“I think that Hector Garcia is a good fighter, I do. He a tough fighter and he been upsetting guys too. But I feel like, with that fight, that Tank is just going to be too elusive. That guy Hector, his defense is not the best. He got good offense and he come forward and he coming to fight, but you got to have some kind of defense.
“You’re not going to go in and just walk Tank down how he walked Chris Colbert down, it’s not happening! So he got to be careful. If he do go in there and try to do that he is going to get caught! So that’s a fight I see Tank winning, and the Ryan Garcia fight! But like I said, its boxing – anything can happen in that ring.”
