Mikaela Mayer and Alycia Baumgardner reignite their old beef
Unified junior lightweight champion Mikaela Mayer (16-0, 5ko) and WBC champion Alycia “The Bomb” Baumgardner (11-1, 7ko) have taken to social media, reigniting their beef from 2020. The junior lightweight division has a mini-tournament that will crown an undisputed champion when all is said and done.
HOW DID WE GET HERE?
The odds-on favorite to fight in the finals were Mayer and former WBC champion Terri Harper. The unified champion held up her end by defeating then IBF champion Maiva Hamadouche on November 6. Harper was going to face WBA champion Hyun Mi Choi in the second installment. However, she suffered a hand injury that postponed those plans. Upon recovering, the WBC champion decided to take a tune-up fight with Baumgardner, and things went very wrong, very quickly.
The Bomb dropped a bomb of a right-hand that had Harper out on her feet, prompting the ref to stop the fight in the fourth round. Baumgardner wasted little time in announcing her claim of being the top dog. Furthermore, she called out the other champions to “come get this work”. As of right now, the boxing community is waiting to see if Harper will invoke the rematch clause.
A QUICK LOOK BACK
In 2020, Baumgardner expressed frustration with some fighters protecting and padding their record over fighting the best available opponent. Mayer was one of the fighters she would go after, in the interview with Ring IQ Boxing talk. Moreover, she claimed that if they ever met, she would knockout the unified champion.
Of course, this turned into a social media clap-back session with Mayer revealing that the Baumgardner turned down the fight.
“So you’re that much better, but 4 weeks wasn’t enough? I was game, why weren’t you? Here’s what you need to look in the mirror and admit to yourself….I was simply too out of shape.”
THEY NEED TO FIGHT IN 2022
Well, it seems that the WBC champion has not let go of the desire to fight Mayer.
Naturally, this got an immediate response from Mayer, who was not about to back down.
“Can’t fuckin wait. Don’t try and baby that belt either, time to back up your big mouth and unify. @alyciambaum.”
Baumgardner was only getting started. During an interview with Women in Boxing, she issued a little message to the rival unified champion.
“I just see someone who is really hating the fact that I won. She really thought that Harper was going to beat me, and so to me, she is just a real-life hater. She doesn’t like that the attention is not on her, and I think she understands that who I am is what I am about.
I can do it all, and I think she feels that I am a threat to her. She should because I am, and when that fight soon comes to happen, she will know who I am and what I am made of.”
Mayer, always ready to mix it up in the ring or on social media, instantly clapped back.
