Floyd Mayweather open to making Davis v Lopez in the future!
Two-division world champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis (23-0, 22KOs) has all eyes on him ahead of his October 31 showdown with fellow multi-division world champion Leo Santa Cruz (37-1-1, 19KOs). A lot of people have been calling for Davis to step his up competition for a few years now. So much so that there are now questions about his desire to do so. However, his promoter and all-time great fighter Floyd Mayweather Jr. has message to all of Davis’ critics.
Speaking to Stephen A. Smith and Max Kellerman on ESPN’s First Take, the former champion had this to say regarding Tank and a possible matchup with unified lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez.
“If you guys are basically asking me, Tank is not scared of anyone, and the reason why we are not able to make certain fights with Top Rank is because, like I said before… So many belts, so many champions, but if we can sit down and come to the table… I think if Tank gets past Leo, which I truly believe he can, it may not be easy. Then we move on and we fight one more fight. Then hopefully a fight with Teofimo can be made.”
That statement from Mayweather is music to boxing fan’s ears. A fight between two unbeaten power-punching champions in their prime is a matchup to be made in 2021! Let us hope this fight truly comes to fruition.
