Keith Thurman versus Jaron Ennis Only Makes Sense

Following his July 20, 2019 loss to boxing phenomenon Manny Pacquiao, former 147-pound champion Keith “One Time” Thurman (30-1, 22 KO’s) has only staged one prizefight. In that lonely bout, One Time bested the largely undecorated Mario Barrios on February 5, 2022. Despite his staggering inactivity, the hard hitting Floridian still has his mind set on capturing the top of the welterweight mountain. Unfortunately for him, undisputed welterweight champion Terence Crawford has no desire to dance with him. So this just may be where IBF 147-pound champion Jaron “Boots” Ennis (31-0, 28 KO’s) finally comes into play.

Now that the top dog of the division has shattered all notion of a duel, it might be time for Thurman to start scouting another route to his goals. In the opinion of many, his best bet would be to finally take on Ennis. Boots has consistently called out Thurman who has just as routinely swerved the match. One Time did say that he’d face the young gun if a contract was sent but nothing much seemed to materialize from that situation.

BUT WHY NOT?!

Maybe now is the optimal time to revisit that situation. If not, Thurman just may continue to find himself standing on the outside looking in. Without question, the boxing fans are a fickle bunch who oftentimes suffer from frightfully short memories. Bearing this mind, it would be rather prudent for One Time to make a power move to revitalize his name in the eyes of the boxing populace. One would think that a duel with the dangerous and often talked about Boots would be just what the doctor ordered.

Instead, Thurman seems hellbent on committing the same mistake for the third time by treating Ennis like he is an order of small fries as he did with Crawford and Spence. Clearly, that did not work out all that well for him. Not only this, Thurman is ranked #3 (WBA) and not in the top fifteen of any other organization. So why he would not want to dance with an Interim champ and thereby, if victorious, guarantee himself a shot at the full title in the very near future is anyone’s guess. No matter how the situation plays out however, stay tuned to 3Kings Boxing for all the latest twists and turns of his evolving situation.
