Caleb Plant Calls Out David Benavidez in September

Never one to fall victim to excessively melancholy emotions, IBF super middleweight champion Caleb “Sweethands” Plant (20-0, 12 KO’s) is looking for silver linings during this COVID-19 shut down. One such potential prospect is obtaining a long-coveted bout with divisional rival WBC super middleweight champion David “Red Flag” Benavidez (22-0, 19 KO’s). These two men share a healthy distaste for one another that extends far past the boxing ring.

WANT TO FIGHT NOW?!

While taking to his social media to conduct an interview with Fight Hype, Plant laid out a potential road map for facing Benavidez before the end of 2020. Prior to the coronavirus shutting down every foreseeable prizefight for the next several months, Benavidez was on the books to face Avni “Mr. Robot” Yildirim (21-2, 12 KO’s). Not only has that bout been postponed, Yildririm is apparently now injured.

Naturally, this is bad news for Yildirim. However, it’s a shining window of opportunity for Plant. Provided this new wiggle room to make a bout happen, Sweetshands would love to get his mitts on Red Flag in September. According to the Nashville native, the Benavidez fight is one that he has openly chased for a while now and he would hate to lose out on this newly presented opening.

“What I really want is a unification fight with David Benavidez, that’s what I really want. You know we’re under the same company, I think it would be easy to make that fight. When he fought Ronald Gravil to win his title, he got dropped in that fight actually. But when he won his world title fight against Ronald Gravil, I was standing at the bottom of the steps saying, ‘hey, when are we going to fight?’ But there are people out there who think I am scared to fight him…it looks like his fight in April is cancelled obviously. So if ain’t none of us fighting until September, then me and David can fight in September too.”

Hopefully boxing politics and global medical crises do not prevent this thrilling match-up from being made! In the meantime, stay tuned to 3kingsboxing for all the latest boxing news and updates.
