Shawn Porter still wants the fight with Terence Crawford
When it comes to former world welterweight champion Shawn “Showtime” Porter (31-3-1, 17 KO’s), there is no question that he thrives on facing the best. In fact, one would be hard pressed to find a resume superior to his among today’s top welterweights. Sadly, despite his willingness to fight, all-action style, and laundry list of entertaining bouts, Porter is often without an opponent.
Right now, the Ohioan has been out of the ring since August 2020 when he battered and abused Sebastian Formella for twelve straight rounds. Porter was on a shelf for about a year following his bout with Errol Spence before locking horns with Formella. Even now, Showtime, who is ranked #1 (WBC), #2 (WBO) and #2 (IBF), doesn’t have any official fight on the books. Yet, one of his most desired fights, with WBO World welterweight champion Terence “Bud’ Crawford (37-0, 28 KO’s), is seemingly still wide open.
LOOK AT THE BRIGHT SIDE
There are countless boxing enthusiasts who have become fed up with Crawford’s bare-ribs resume at 147. Let him and his promoter Bob Arum tell it, there is no one willing to fight him. The trouble with this is the fact that this excuse makes no sense. Keith Thurman, Vergil Ortiz and Porter, who are all solid names, have all made themselves available to a dustup with Bud. Even still, Crawford has not penned a fight with one welterweight opponent that can excite the boxing public.
Some believe this is due to boxing politics, while others think that it’s really Crawford’s prima donna attitude that’s the problem. When asked in a recent interview with Fight Hype, Porter didn’t pretend to have the answer.
“I’ve been publicly saying I want the Terence Crawford fight and I do, I do want that fight! But we talk about “our” side of the yard…I don’t know exactly what that is, I don’t know. I don’t really like to speculate and all that kind of stuff, I understand the business of boxing but when it comes to different promoters working together and networks working together and all that kind of stuff, the only thing that I can say is I have seen it work once now, almost twice recently, with Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder. It gives me hope that something can be done and I would love something like that for myself and for Terence Crawford.”
FINGERS CROSSED
It is getting tiresome waiting on Crawford to test his might and ample skills against some of the premiere competition in the division. This is why it’s so irksome that there are ready and willing combatants such as Porter on the sidelines waiting to get in the game. Let’s just hope that they both sign up for a mouthwatering dustup in their next outings. It also certainly wouldn’t hurt if they fought one another! Regardless of whom they square-off with next, 3kingsboxing will be there to report the news.
